Palm Sunday Mass in San Fernando Cathedral

We went to mass Saturday evening at San Fernando Cathedral which is the oldest church in Texas. It was began March 9, 1731 when fifteen families of fifty-five settlers arrived from the Canary Islands and were welcomed in the name of King Phillip V of Spain. The church was completed in 1749 and the original walls still stand today forming what is now the sanctuary (the area around and behind the altar) of the present church. These walls are the oldest standing structure in the State of Texas. Mass was completely sung (basically a high mass without Latin) including the Passion Play. The music was done by the "San Fernando's Mariachi Choir" which was a 30 member band including trumpets, guitars, and guitarron. The girls were fascinated and absolutely wonderful after a long day of visiting the missions. Mackenzie took a few pictures around the church and pointed out all the saints, parts of the church, etc. She is definitely ready for First Communion.

Here are the girls sharing a quiet moment on the Riverwalk. How Sweet!!!!
